Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)

The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) are designed to help ensure that Massachusetts educators can communicate adequately with students, parents/guardians, and other educators and that individuals are knowledgeable in the subject matter of the license(s) sought. Testing requirements for candidates seeking vocational technical and adult basic education licenses can be found on the corresponding homepages for those license categories.

Required Tests:

Regardless of whether or not you have passed licensure tests in other states, most educators seeking a license in the State of Massachusetts are required to take and pass the Communication and Literacy Skills MTEL. Educators who wish to pursue an academic teacher or academic teacher specialist license will also be required to take and pass additional subject matter knowledge tests.

Additional Test Information: Practice Tests, Cost, Registration etc.

Registering for MTEL Tests / Generating Your MEPID Number

Candidates registering to take the MTEL are now required to enter a MEPID number in order to register for a test. A MEPID number is assigned to anyone who creates a profile in the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's Educator Licensure and Renewal system (ELAR). A MEPID may also be assigned by the district, charter school or collaborative where you are employed.
