2012 MCAS
Grade 10 English Language Arts Composition
Topic/Idea Development - Score Point 4

This moderately developed composition opens with an appropriate description of the villain, or "antagonist," of Orwell's novel Animal Farm: Napoleon is described as one whose "name suits him well, as he takes over the animal's society by force." Throughout the essay, the writer uses selective plot details to support an image of a leader who exercises total control through terror and represents totalitarianism. The writing is clear and organized, though development of ideas is somewhat point-to-point and repetitive. The final paragraph restates elements of Napoleon's rise to power and compares this process to "the failed experiment of communism, and how it just leads to power grabbing." Despite this attempt at more insightful analysis, the ideas are not fully developed enough to earn a higher score.
