2019 MCAS
Grade 5 English Language Arts
Question 9
Idea Development - Score Point 4
The narrative, a fully developed continuation of the story, describes what happens next in The Wild Robot. Effective details, such as "All of the otters scurried back to their den and stared at the robot from the safety of their home," are used to develop the setting, characters, and plot. Organization is appropriate, even though the pacing of events toward the end is rushed. In the last paragraph, for example, the narrative describes an encounter with a bear, finding another robot, building a raft, and then setting sail. There is a full awareness of purpose throughout the narrative.
Standard English Conventions - Score Point 3
The narrative displays consistent control of a variety of sentence structures, as shown in the following: "And the beast had razor sharp teeth, with a wet, black snout. The robot had found a bear." Minor errors in the narrative, such as "knifes" instead of knives, "it's" instead of its, or "wern't" instead of weren't, do not detract from understanding. Based on its length and complexity, the narrative demonstrates consistent control of Standard English conventions for this grade level.
