1. National Blue Ribbon Schools:

U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos this week recognized three Massachusetts schools as National Blue Ribbon Schools for 2018. The recognition is based on a school’s overall academic performance or progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups. All three Massachusetts schools were recognized for the progress in closing achievement gaps. The three schools are: Abington High School, Minuteman Regional Vocational Technical High School in Lexington, and Swampscott High School. Congratulations to all!

Picture of the Week:

On October 4, 2018, Commissioner Riley’s visits included Westfield Technical Academy’s aviation maintenance technology program. Commissioner Riley saw the program’s space both at the school and in a hangar at Westfield-Barnes Regional Airport.

3. Additional Translations of Press Release on MCAS and Accountability Results:

In addition to the existing English and Spanish versions of the Sept. 27, 2018 press release about the 2018 MCAS and accountability results, DESE also has versions available in Portuguese, Haitian Creole, traditional Chinese, Vietnamese, and Arabic (the Arabic version is available upon request to jreis@doe.mass.edu). In addition to the individual links above, most of the translations are available from a single page online.

4. Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council to Meet:

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's Accountability and Assistance Advisory Council will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Thursday, October 11 at the Best Western Royal Plaza Hotel, 181 Boston Post Road West, Marlborough. Topics for discussion include 2018 assessment and accountability results, assistance, and district and school report cards.

5. Systemic Student Support (S3) Academy:

The Department is pleased to announce a new Systemic Student Support (S3) Academy aligned with our Safe and Supportive Schools initiatives and our existing academies for Positive Behavioral Intervention & Supports (PBIS), tiered literacy, tiered math, and inclusive Tier 1 Instruction. The academy will be facilitated by the Rennie Center and Boston College Lynch School of Education’s Center for Optimized Student Support and will focus on K-8 schools. This year, the academy will include three in-person workshops (in December, February and April) and two virtual convenings (January and March), as well as additional targeted support and technical assistance. The academy is designed to deepen practitioners’ understanding of the critical components of a system that effectively and proactively identifies and addresses students’ strengths and needs. By the end of the year, participants will have developed a plan to advance a system of integrated student support that is embedded in/aligned with their overall school and district improvement efforts (including the work of establishing safe and supportive schools).  Applications are due on Friday, October 26. See the application instructions for more details. The Department will also hold an informational webinar from 10:00-11:00 a.m. on October 11. To register or learn more, email rshor@doe.mass.edu.

6. U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship:

The U.S. Senate Youth Scholarship Program (USSYP) is a nationwide college scholarship program, designed to promote student leaders' awareness, participation and interest in government. The program is open to students currently enrolled as high school juniors or seniors in a Massachusetts public, charter, or private school and who are currently serving in an elected or appointed position in student government or a civic or educational organization where they are representing the entire student body. Massachusetts uses a qualifying exam as the initial step for the scholarship. Eligible students must register before 5 p.m. Friday, October 12 to take the qualifying exam.
