1. Educators Sought for MTEL Development:


The Department and the Evaluation Systems group of Pearson are seeking currently licensed Massachusetts educators and Massachusetts educator preparation program faculty who wish to participate in development activities for Massachusetts Tests of Educator Licensure (MTELs) that are undergoing development. More information is available online.
An Objective Review Conference is being planned for March 2020 for the following fields:
  • General Curriculum: Mathematics and multi-subject subtests
  • Middle School Humanities
  • Early Childhood
  • History/Social Science
  • Reading Specialist
Test development activities are also planned through 2021 for the following fields:
  • Sciences: Biology, Chemistry, Digital Literacy/Computer Science, Earth and Space Science, Physics, Technology/Engineering and General Science
  • Mathematics:  Elementary, Middle School and Secondary
  • English
  • Foundations of Reading

3. Innovation Pathways Grants:


On January 16, the Baker-Polito Administration awarded more than $676,000 in grants to 14 high schools that have launched new Innovation Pathways programs. Innovation Pathways are early career programs that give students experience in a specific high-demand industry through college coursework and internships with local employers. The high schools that received grants have programs that DESE approved in spring 2019 in preparation for fall enrollment. Congratulations to all!

  • UN art contest: The U.S. Mission to the United Nations is holding an art contest themed “The Future We Want” in recognition of the United Nations’ 75th Anniversary. The competition is open to youth ages 13-15 and encourages participants to submit artwork about their vision for the future. Students can submit paintings, drawings, collages, etc., until Sunday, January 26. Finalists will have their artwork displayed in the lobby of the U.S. Mission in New York City. More information is available at the link above, and anyone with questions can email UN75@state.gov.
  • Accounting Program for Building the Profession: Registration is open for the Northeast Regional Conference of the Association of International Certified Public Accountants’ Accounting Program for Building the Profession. The conference will run July 29-31 in Boston and will give teachers training to provide more advanced, engaging accounting content. It will also include a comprehensive overview of how accounting helps guide business decisions.
  • Statistics in Schools Ambassador Program: The U.S. Census Bureau is looking for teacher ambassadors to join the Statistics in Schools Ambassador Program. Pre-K through 12th grade teachers are invited to email CLMSO.SISambassador@census.gov for more information.
  • Middle School Exploration Grant: American Student Assistance’ Middle School Exploration Grant will offer winning Massachusetts schools and districts up to $100,000 each over 3 years to implement or expand high-impact programs that bring career exploration and experiential learning to life for students in grades 6-8. Registration is open for an informational webinar and live Q&A session that will be held from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, January 29, and applications are due February 28.
