Module Two

Module Title:

Module Goal: To provide information regarding general and special education laws and regulations to assist principals and assistant principals in integrating the various components of the role of principal.

Module Objectives:

  • To discuss regulatory requirements for ensuring a responsive school environment that meets the needs of diverse learners

    • Professional Development Plans
    • District Curriculum Accommodation Plan
    • Instructional Support Services

  • To review the responsibilities of the school principal under Massachusetts Special Education Regulations

    • Instructional support
    • Coordination with special education
    • Educational services in home or hospital

  • To highlight the six basic principles of federal and state special education law that drive district practice

    • Parent and student participation
    • Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE)
    • Appropriate evaluation
    • Individualized Education Program (IEP)
    • Least Restrictive Environment (LRE)
    • Procedural safeguards

  • To summarizes key concepts in relationship to special education eligibility, IEP development and placement determination


Intended Audience: Principals and Assistant Principals in Elementary, Middle and High Schools

Training Length: 1 – 2 hours

Module Components: PowerPoint Presentation with thirty-nine annotated slides and three supplemental handouts.
