Discipline - Life Science

Core Idea - From Molecules to Organisms: Structures and Processes

[PreK.LS.1.1] - Compare, using descriptions and drawings, the external body parts of animals (including humans) and plants and explain functions of some of the observable body parts. Clarification Statement: Examples can include comparison of humans and horses: humans have two legs and horses four, but both use legs to move.

Predecessor Standards:

No Predecessor Standards found.

Successor Standards:

  • 1.LS.1.1
Use evidence to explain that (a) different animals use their body parts and senses in different ways to see, hear, grasp objects, protect themselves, move from place to place, and seek, find, and take in food, water, and air, and (b) plants have roots, stems, leaves, flowers, and fruits that are used to take in water, air, and other nutrients, and produce food for the plant.Clarification Statement: Descriptions are not expected to include mechanisms such as the process of photosynthesis.

Same Level Standards:

  • RI.PK.7
With prompting and support, describe important details from an illustration or photograph.
  • PK.CC.C.4
Count many kinds of concrete objects and actions up to ten, using one-to-one correspondence, and accurately count as many as seven things in a scattered configuration. Recognize the “one more,” “one less” patterns.
  • PK.CC.C.5
Use comparative language, such as more/less than, equal to, to compare and describe collections of objects.
  • PK.OA.A.1
Use concrete objects to model real-world addition (putting together) and subtraction (taking away) problems up through five.
  • PK.MD.A.1
Recognize the attributes of length, area, weight, and capacity of everyday objects using appropriate vocabulary (e.g., long, short, tall, heavy, light, big, small, wide, narrow).
  • PK.MD.A.2
Compare the attributes of length and weight for two objects, including longer/shorter, same length; heavier/lighter, same weight; holds more/less, holds the same amount.
  • PreK.LS.1.2
Explain that most animals have five senses they use to gather information about the world around them.
