The narrative tells events from Polo's point of view but is only somewhat developed. Changes in Polo's feelings throughout the narrative are described, from his joy of being outside ("Running what a glorio[u]s feeling"), to his uncertainty of their decision to leave the house ("I looked about myself in dismay"). The voice of the character is consistent; however, most ideas are basic and closely paraphrased from the passage. There is a partial awareness of the purpose for writing.

It was pretty cool being outside with Marco and hiding from Mr. Neal especiely because it was my first time ever going outside. When we got out we sprinted to a bush and ducked under. I was kind of getting bored after 5 minutes of hiding there but then we heard footsteps. Don't move a muscle Marco told me. And just then Mr. Neal walked around the corner of the house. As soon as he went back inside Marco turned to me and whispered do you see that shed next to the porch? Ya I whispered back. When I say go we run behind it OK. OK I said. GO! We streaked across the yard. Running what a glorios feeling. And then we were there. I looked about myself in dismay. There were cobwebs, sticks and old newspaper all over the place! This is where were escaping to? Of course not Marco said. Do you see the tree's out in the yard? I nodded. Now do you see the fence beyond the tree's? I nodded again. Beyond that fence is the whole world and it's just waiting for us.
