Grade 4 English Language Arts
Question 8

Idea Development - Score Point 4

The narrative is fully developed as it retells events from Polo's point of view. A clear expression of ideas is conveyed as Polo describes his feelings; for example, "On the outside I was calm[,] but on the inside I was nervous." Effective organization and description of events show an explicit connection to the plot elements in the original text. The narrative demonstrates a full awareness of the purpose for writing as the story moves toward Polo's understanding that "the backyard was only the beginning of my outside adventure."

Standard English Conventions - Score Point 3

The narrative contains a variety of sentence structures. There are minor errors in conventions such as a lack of quotation marks for dialogue, other punctuation, and grammar usage (e.g., "passed" instead of "past"), but these errors do not impede understanding. Based on its length and complexity, the essay demonstrates consistent control of Standard English conventions for this grade level.

One Wensday evening my brother Marco, and I snuck out of the backdoor. We quickly rushed to a bush and squirmed and wiggeld to get all the way to the back of the bush and hid there. I had never left the house before so everything was new and exciting and scary all at the same time. Marco told what grass was, and what earth was. All of a sudden we heard a pitter patter of feet coming our way. On the outside I was calm, but on the inside I was nervous. Were we going to get caught and brought back inside. Was my outside experience over! It was Mr. Neal, but he didnt find us. Instead he walked right passed us. Maorco and I heard a rusty squeaking coming from the direction Mr. Neal walked. Mr. Neal walked past us again and went back inside. After a minute or two we heard Marco and I heard a new sound, but could not figure out what it was. Then all of a sudden the sounf got louder and louder until something cold and wet hit us like a shower. The shower would keep on leaving and coming back. I finally said Marco I do not want the shower to come back can we please move to diffrent spot so we can dry. Marco agreed and said we could move when the coast is clear and that when he says go follow him to the spot next to the porch amd shed. The spot we moved to had trash everywere. I said allowed this is what we were escaping to. Marco asked me if i could see the skinny tall tree to the right. I said yes. Marco asked if could see the white fence behind the tree. I said yes. Marco explained that one we got throught that fence there would be a whole new world would be waiting for us to explore. After Marco told me about the other side of the fence I knew the backyard was only the beginning of my outside adventure.
