The narrative tells events from Polo's point of view but is moderately developed. There are also appropriate details that connect to the original story; for example, "Whoosh! A spray of water splashed right on our head." Ideas are adequately expressed and moderately organized as the writer describes how Marco and Polo travel from the house toward the fence at the edge of the yard. There is a sufficient awareness of the purpose for writing.

Standard English Conventions - Score Point 3

Given its length and complexity, the narrative provides the writer an opportunity to demonstrate consistent control of Standard English conventions for this grade level.
Answer for Idea Development Score Point 3, and Standard English Conventions Score Point 3
My brother Marco took me to the outside world so we could be free. He said "it is better being outdoors and on your own is the best thing that can happen to a cat." But the thing is, I did not know where anything was. For example, I thought the earth smelled like flower, and I thought the grass was broom bristles.

Marco told me to not make a sound at all. I was confused. Then he told me Mr. Neal was coming across the yard. Also, he said "If he sees us, it means jail inside forever." I heard a weird noise. Whoosh! A spray of water splashed right on our head. My eyes grew huge, Marco hissed at me and said "Do not move." I really thought we were goners.

Marco said we she hide in a different place. He was pointing to a space behind a porch. He told me "When I say go, make a run for it." Go! Marco hissed. Marco and I Streaked through the wet grass and went behind the shed. It was so dirty; There was cobwebs, old newspaper, dry leaves sticks, spiders, and a broken clay pot. Marco said "we are only staying here until the coast is clear." He asked me "Do you see the trees out there in the yard." I nodded. "Do you see the fence beyond the trees." he asked. Yes. Also he said "Beyond that fence is the whole world, and it is waiting just for us."
