Question 24

Idea Development - Score Point 2

The central idea of how Rinko in A Jar of Dreams and the speaker in Somewhere Among feel about their heritage is somewhat developed. The essay demonstrates a basic understanding of how Rinko and the speaker feel out of place. Limited selection of evidence supports these feelings: "'I hate always being different and left out.'" and "'Not like anyone else here or there I sometimes feel alone on an island.'" Organization is limited, as basic ideas are grouped into two body paragraphs with an introductory and concluding sentence. The response demonstrates a partial awareness of the writing task.

Standard English Conventions - Score Point 2

The response demonstrates mostly consistent control of Standard English conventions in grammar, usage, and mechanics. Sentences are repetitive in form, particularly those that include text-based evidence. While sentences are usually correctly punctuated, this brief response cannot demonstrate more than mostly consistent control of sentence structure.
Answer for Idea Development Score Point 2, and Standard English Conventions Score Point 2
Rinko in "A Jar Of Dreams" and the speaker in "Somewhere Among" feel out of place because of their heritage. I know this because in "A Jar Of Dreams", it says, "'I hate always being different and and left out' I told Aunt Waka." It also says, "I told Aunt Waka how I felt at school- how the boys called me names and the girls made me feel left out." This shows that Rinko feels different and excluded at school because of her heritage.

In "Somewhere Among", it states, "Everywhere I go here or there I am different." It also says, "Not like anyone else here or there I sometimes feel alone on an island surrounded by multitudes of people." People call the speaker different things like binational, half, biracial, etc. This shows that the speaker in "Somewhere Among" feels diiferent and out of place because of her heritage. Rinko and the speaker both feel excluded because of their heritage.
