Massachusetts has adopted the Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for English Language Arts and Literacy . An essential step in this instructional shift is alignment of training in educator preparation programs to ensure that incoming educators are prepared with the content for which they will be responsible as teachers. To guide educator preparation programs in this alignment work, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has revised the Subject Matter Knowledge (SMK) guidelines for the Reading Specialist License. The proposed SMK revision is now available for public comment until March 29, 2019. In addition to changes to preparation programs, the changes to the SMK will lead to revisions of the Reading Specialist MTEL examination.
