The Board will hear a report on the Department's support to districts to integrate curriculum frameworks and educator evaluation, and discuss and vote on a technical amendment to the Educator Evaluation Regulations. The Board will hear an update on the new background checks law for school employees and vote on the final adoption of those regulations. The Board will take an initial vote to solicit public comment on proposed amendments to the Charter School Regulations and the new Virtual School Regulations. The Board will discuss the student discipline law that takes effect next July and review the Department's cost study, recently filed with the Legislature. As a reminder, the July 1, 2014 deadline for nearly 35,000 Massachusetts educators to renew their Professional License(s) is fast approaching. Given the anticipated volume of renewals, we encourage educators to engage in the renewal process early. Today's update represents the first of what will be a series of communications in the coming months to remind school and district leaders and educators about this deadline.
The Department will also use these reminders as an opportunity to provide information on the additional supports that are available to assist educators and districts. These supports will include in-person license renewal labs here in Malden, dedicated assistance from Department staff for accessing the Educator Licensing and Recruitment (ELAR) system, and supporting materials including updated and new content via PowerPoint presentations and renewal brochures. Beginning on January 4, 2014, educators should contact James Wilkinson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 781-338-6614 for password assistance with ELAR. Additional information in the coming months will be available at http://www.doe.mass.edu/recert/.
