Commissioner's Weekly Update - May 17, 2013
Additional FY 2013 State Aid:
As a result of better than expected state revenues, Governor Patrick today announced the restoration of some funds that had been cut from the budget earlier this year. These restorations include $11.5 million for the circuit breaker program, $5.25 million for homeless student transportation, and $1 million for regional transportation. These amounts will be added to the final payments to districts scheduled for next month. If you have any questions, please contact Bill Bell at email@example.com.
Summer Institutes on Curriculum Alignment and Mapping Project:
ESE, in partnership with the Governor's Readiness Centers, has developed a new Curriculum Alignment and Mapping Project (CAMP) presenting curriculum mapping as a core tool for communicating about and aligning curriculum and instruction across grades, subject areas, and schools. Registration for the summer CAMP Institutes is now open. These two-day sessions will provide substantial time for district teams to develop curriculum maps to improve teaching and learning. Board of Elementary and Secondary Education to Meet on May 21:
The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education will meet on May 21 at the Horace Mann Middle School in Franklin. Each May, the Board travels to the home school district of its student representative. Ryan Casey, the 2012-13 student representative to the Board and chair of the State Student Advisory Council, is a senior at Franklin High School. At its May 21 meeting, the Board will hear a presentation from outgoing 2013 Mass. Teacher of the Year Kathleen Turner, an update on model curriculum units, a progress report on the RETELL initiative, and an update on the FY 2014 state education budget. The Board will also discuss and vote on three charter school matters. To see the agenda, go to http://www.doe.mass.edu/boe/docs/2013-05/.
2012-13 Licensure Support:
The Licensure Office will hold two, identical webinars on May 31 and June 12 to help districts rectify any last minute licensure issues for the 2012-13 school year and to prepare for staffing needs for the upcoming school year. The webinar will provide the opportunity to learn in depth about the process of applying for and receiving a licensure hardship waiver. The sessions are appropriate for administrators and central office staff who are involved in the waiver process - and are not appropriate for individual educators employed on a waiver. To register for either session, go to http://www.doe.mass.edu/conference/?ConferenceID=1571.
District-Determined Measures - Technical Guide A:
Technical Guide A, a supplement to Part VII of the Mass. Model Educator Evaluation System, is now available at http://www.doe.mass.edu/edeval/ddm/TechnicalGuide.pdf. The guide describes key assessment concepts that district teams should consider when selecting district-determined measures. It also provides guidance on how to select or modify existing assessments and how to build a new assessment. If you have any questions about Technical Guide A, please contact Ron Noble at firstname.lastname@example.org.
