Commissioner's Weekly Update - July 19, 2013
Newly Posted Data on Educator Preparation Programs:
As part of our ongoing effort to improve educator effectiveness and provide useful information to the public, ESE has recently posted enrollment, completion, and Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) pass rate data for candidates of educator preparation programs. Additional information on annual goals, partnerships, and programs offered is also available. To view the data, go to Profiles on ESE's website at http://profiles.doe.mass.edu/ and select "Educator Preparation Program Provider" from the Organization Type drop-down menu. Later this year, ESE will post additional information on employment and retention rates in Massachusetts public schools, results from surveys of program candidates, and aggregate evaluation ratings of program completers. If you have any questions, please contact Liz Losee, Assistant Director of the Office of Educator Policy, Preparation, and Leadership, at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Fiscal Year 2013 Supplemental Appropriation Bill:
Last Thursday, Governor Patrick signed a Fiscal Year (FY) 2013 supplemental appropriation bill that included an additional $8 million for charter school tuition reimbursements. All municipalities and regional school districts that received reimbursements in FY 2013 will receive an additional payment this summer. ESE will post updated calculations shortly on the School Finance page at http://www.doe.mass.edu/finance/.
Update on Early Warning Indicator System:
ESE developed the Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS) to identify students who are potentially "off track" for grade-level or development age progress, including for high school graduation (potential dropouts). EWIS provides districts with valuable data and tools to help educators systematically identify students who may need additional supports to get "on track" to meet key academic goals. We are currently updating EWIS for all students expected in grades 1-12 in the 2013-14 school year. We anticipate releasing EWIS data in three reports that will reside in Edwin Analytics by early September.
To ensure that your district receives its 2013-14 EWIS data on time, please certify all student data collections (i.e., SIMS, SCS, and SSDR) according to the schedule posted at http://www.doe.mass.edu/infoservices/data/schedule.html, and complete the student claiming process by August 23, 2013 for all students new to your district or in a new school. If you have any questions, please contact the Edwin team at Edwin@doe.mass.edu.
Proposed Virtual Schools - Letter of Intent:
ESE invites schools and collaboratives interested in applying for a certificate to operate a virtual school to submit a Letter of Intent by August 16, 2013. For more information, go to http://www.doe.mass.edu/odl/cmvs/app-process.html, where you will find an overview of the entire application process. Although designed for planning purposes and not competitive, the Letter of Intent is a required submission for any interested applicants to be eligible to submit a full application in the fall. We will post the full application on October 1. Please contact Luis Rodriguez, Director of the Office of Digital Learning, at email@example.com with any questions.
