Commissioner's Weekly Update - September 2, 2016
Highlights of Changes to McKinney-Vento under ESSA:
The federal McKinney-Vento Homeless Education Assistance Act was reauthorized as part of the federal Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and that reauthorization goes into effect October 1, 2016. A memorandum that highlights information and upcoming trainings related to changes that ESSA brought to McKinney-Vento is now available on ESE's Homeless Assistance webpage and was recently sent to all homeless education liaisons. Trainings include half-day orientation sessions to McKinney-Vento and webinars on McKinney-Vento and foster care.
District-Educator Preparation Partnership Innovation Grant:
In an effort to strengthen the teacher workforce from preparation through employment, ESE is offering grant funding to support innovative partnerships between districts and educator preparation programs. The Department seeks partnership models that are bold, mutually beneficial, and clearly focused on producing educators who meet district and student needs. Successful proposals will outline models that are sustainable and/or replicable across other districts and educator preparation organizations. Please apply! The application is open until November 30.
Information Sessions on Safe and Supportive Schools Grant:
The Department has scheduled grant information sessions throughout September to share details and address questions about the FY17 Safe and Supportive Schools competitive grant. The grant is intended to provide funding to districts and their selected schools to develop action plans that organize, integrate, and sustain school and district-wide efforts to create safe and supportive school environments and coordinate and align student support initiatives. Districts may apply for up to $10,000 per participating school to create school and district action plans. Full details about the grant will be available once it is posted later this month on ESE's grants website as FY17 fund code 335.
