Orientation for New Charter School Special Education and ELL Administrators

This meeting is intended for any special education and ELL directors who are new to their position (hired within the last two years). During the meeting, you will have the opportunity to meet with Department staff, ask questions about the presentations/materials, and network with fellow charter leaders. Current administrators who want a refresher on basic charter school information are welcome to attend. Please register by August 15th. Topics will include: Access and Equity Issues in Charter Schools This portion will focus on a number of topics that relate to Charter School Performance Criterion 2, 3, 6.4, 7.1, and 7.2. These will include a discussion of special education identification, assessment and service, continuum requirements and district intersections, when/what to expect during your charter term, writing IEPs (including the legal requirements and responsibilities of charter schools when writing IEPs), social-emotional and health needs, and general compliance. English Language Learners This session will include an overview of the RETELL initiative for English Language Learner education, including the screening requirements of ELL students, implementation of WIDA standards and ESL curriculum development, as well as issues related to coordinating SEI endorsement and school-wide implementation expectations for both teachers and administrators.
