Dropout Data Summary Report

To:Superintendents
From:Paula O’Sullivan, Director of Information Services
Date:May 9, 2005

In an effort to keep districts up-to-date on the calculation of dropout rates, the MADOE created an interactive dropout report - the Dropout Data Summary Report. This report is currently available for the 2002-03 school year and the 2003-04 school year. These reports may be accessed via the Security Portal with the "MDCS" security role.

This report has several key features:

  • A breakdown of the data involved in the dropout calculations:
    • High School Enrollment, Summer Dropouts, End-of-Year Dropouts, Returned Dropouts, Dropout Count, and Dropout Rate.
  • Dropout counts that link to a list of students that comprise the data.
  • Dropout terms that link to more detailed explanations.

All of the data in the 2002-03 report are final and were included in the public report, Dropout Rates in Massachusetts Public Schools: 2002-03.

For 2003-04, no further edits may be made to the data for the High School Enrollment, End-of-Year Dropouts, and Returned Dropouts.

In addition, a new tip sheet, "Understanding Dropout Calculations", is accessible in the "About This Data" section above the report, as well as on the DOE website.

Please be aware that the 2004-05 Dropout Data Summary Report will be available soon with the data collected up to this point.

For further information or questions about your dropout data please contact Jenny Caldwell at 781-338-6839 or jcaldwell@doe.mass.edu.

Thank you.
