Massachusetts Innovation Schools Annual Evaluation

To:Superintendents in Districts with Innovation Schools or Innovation Academies
From:Alison Bagg, Director, Office of Charter Schools and School Redesign
Date:February 2017

stopline

The Innovation Schools Statute (M.G.L.,c.71,s.92), requires superintendents in districts with innovation schools to evaluate these schools at least annually. The purpose of the evaluation is to both determine whether the school has met the annual goals articulated in its approved Innovation Plan and to assess the implementation of the Innovation Plan at the school. These reports must be submitted to the local School Committee as well as to the Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education by August 1, 2017.

In an effort to assist superintendents with completing the evaluation of each innovation school or academy, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (Department) requests that superintendents use the innovation schools annual evaluation template. The template can be found on the Department's innovation schools website at Innovation Schools Guidance Documents page. While use of this template is encouraged, superintendents may elect to use another format to provide us with the required information.

I am requesting that evaluations for all innovation schools and academies that have been in operation for at least one full academic year in FY17 submit the required evaluation via email to Shay Edmond at sedmond@doe.mass.edu by August 1, 2017.

The Department will use the evaluations to inform decisions about how best to support innovation schools in the future, as well as to inform the annual report to the legislature on innovation schools. Should you have any questions about the evaluation process or the template, please contact Shay Edmond, Innovation Schools Specialist at sedmond@doe.mass.edu or (781) 338-3217.

Please email sedmond@doe.mass.edu with the name and date for which innovation status ended for any of the schools or academies listed below. This information is kindly requested no later August 1, 2017.
