From:Robert Leshin, Director
Office for Food and Nutrition Programs
Date:April 9, 2019

As required by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Office for Food and Nutrition Programs (FNP) will provide training opportunities specific to the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) for Fiscal Year 2019 (FY19) SFSP sponsoring organizations.

The USDA has released several updates to the regulations on program operation. To ensure that all sponsors receive adequate training and notice on these changes, the Office for Food and Nutrition Program (FNP) has planned additional training opportunities. The available training opportunities are detailed below.

  • Prepare for FY19 Summer Programming Webinar: This webinar will provide participants with an overview of all the recent USDA updates to SFSP rules and regulations. These updates impact all SFSP sponsors as they affect eligibility, the application process, and meal service planning. FNP strongly suggests a representative from every sponsor attend this webinar to get the necessary information prior to the roll out of the SFSP application.
    • If you are unable to attend this event, the webinar will be recorded and posted in the Document and Reference Library for post-event access.

  • SFSP Application Overview Webinar: This webinar will provide an overview of the updated SFSP application. It will review the new components, important updates to site and sponsor application, and include a walk-through of the new process for sponsors adding new sites. It is highly recommended that all sponsors attend one of these webinars to ensure compliance with program requirements.
    • This webinar will be recorded and posted in the Document and Reference Library for post-event access.

  • SFSP Application Support Open House: To assist sponsors with the changes to the online application, FNP will offer two open house days where individuals can drop-in during the designated times and get individualized support in completing the online SFSP application. Attendees will have the opportunity to work on the applications onsite and should come prepared with specific questions for FNP staff.

  • FY19 SFSP New Sponsor Required Training (in-person): This in-person training event will cover all aspects of operating the SFSP, including eligibility, meal pattern, and record keeping. New SFSP sponsors are required to attend an in-person SFSP training. Please be aware that SFSP applications must be approved and training attended before the first operating day of your program.
