Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL)

Update to the eligibility for the English as a Second Language (54) MTEL-Flex and the Spanish (28) MTEL-Flex

This notice provides an update to the eligibility for the English as a Second Language (54) MTEL-Flex and the Spanish (28) MTEL-Flex.

Per the original language authorizing the regulatory pilot to allow approved alternative assessments to the MTEL, to be eligible for the English as a Second Language (54) MTEL-Flex and the Spanish (28) MTEL-Flex, candidates must have scored within one standard error of measurement of passing of the corresponding MTEL on or after October 20, 2020.

As a result of the Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's February 22, 2023 vote to update the regulatory language for the pilot, candidates who scored within one standard error of measurement of passing on the English as a Second Language (54) MTEL and the Spanish (28) MTEL before October 20, 2020 are now eligible for the corresponding MTEL-Flexes. Eligible candidates who go into register for the test will find that they now have access to submit the MTEL-Flex.
