Five Proposed Charter Schools Moved to Next Phase of Application Process

MALDEN - Founders of five of the 10 proposed charter schools submitted for consideration this year have been invited by education officials to submit a final application for their school. Final applications are due on November 14, 2006. The final application process includes a rigorous review of the written final application by a review team, an interview of the applicant group by the Department's Charter School Office staff, and a review of any public comments offered to the Department either in writing or at public hearings on charter applications. The Board of Education will vote to grant new charters to those selected in February of 2007. The proposed schools invited to submit full applications are: Fenix Film Charter School, serving students in grades 6-8 from Chelsea, Lynn, and Revere. Enrollment at full capacity: 225. Gateway Collegiate Academy Charter School, serving students in grades 6-12 from Boston. Enrollment at full capacity: 260. Maplewind Community Charter School, serving students in grades 7-12 from Ashburnham, Westminister, Gardner, Narragansett, Quabbin, Ralph C. Maher, Wachusett, and Winchendon. Enrollment at full capacity: 240. Pioneer Valley Chinese Immersion Charter School, serving students in grades K-8 from Agawam, Amherst, Amherst-Pelham, Belchertown, Chesterfield-Goshen, Chicopee, Conway, Deerfield, Easthampton, Franklin, Frontier, Gill-Montague, Granby, Granby, Granville, Greenfield, Hadley, Hampshire, Hatfield, Holyoke, Leverett, Longmeadow, Mohawk Trail, Northhampton, Pioneer Valley, Shutesbury, South Hadley, Southampton, Springfield, Sunderland, West Springfield, Westfield, Westhampton, Whately, Williamsburg. Enrollment at full capacity: 300. College Preparatory Charter School of Springfield, serving grades 6-12. Enrollment at full capacity: 350.
