English Language Learners
Summer SEI Training of Trainers Opportunities and Applications
|To:||District ELL Directors and Coordinators|
|From:||Kathryn Riley, Administrator, Office of Language Acquisition and Academic Achievement|
|Date:||March 30, 2007|
The Department of Education will be conducting a number of Training of Trainers opportunities for Sheltered English Immersion Professional Development during the Summer of 2007. A schedule of these offerings is attached, along with an application form for each one, in the order in which they appear on the schedule.
Each application outlines both the required trainer qualifications, and the amount of time the district must commit to offering at least one cohort of teacher training during the 2007-08 school year. These subsequent, locally scheduled professional development sessions should become an integral part of your district's "Strategic Plan for SEI PD" for the 2007-2008 school year. (The DOE will announce additional SEI PD training opportunities for the forthcoming year, pending State Budget allocations for this purpose.)
Those candidates selected and trained for the Introduction to Second Language Learning and Teaching Training of Trainers (Category 1 - K-12), Enriching Content Classes for Secondary ESOL Students (Category 2 - Secondary) and Making the Connection: ELLs and Subject Matter Texts (Category 4 - Secondary) training will be observed by a DOE representative from the Office of Language Acquisition and Academic Achievement the first time they offer training in your district. They will also need to be released to attend a Trainers Follow-up Session on the date indicated on the attached training schedule. Please make sure that your Superintendent understands the commitment being made by the district before he/she signs each application form.
Application materials may be faxed to Simone Harvey, Office of Language Acquisition, at 781-338-3318, or mailed to the Department of Education at the address indicated at the top of this letterhead. All application materials should be submitted at the same time. Training teams should submit their application materials together, and indicate in a cover memo the names of the two individuals in their prospective training team. Late applications will not be considered. Any questions regarding the training sessions or the application forms should by referred to Dr. Judy Barcelo at 781-338-3557, or at firstname.lastname@example.org.
The purpose of these TOTs is to help your district build capacity for providing ongoing SEI Professional Development in order to qualify your teachers to shelter content for English Language Learners. Please encourage qualified individuals in your district or region to apply prior to the Tuesday, May 1st deadline.
