Massachusetts Charter Schools

Five Proposed Charter Schools Moved to Next Phase of Application Process

MALDEN - Founders of five of the ten proposed charter schools submitted for consideration this year have been invited by education officials to move to the next stage of the process and submit a final application for their school. Final applications are due on November 13, 2007. The final application process includes a rigorous review of the written final application by a review team, an interview of the applicant group by the Department of Education's Charter School Office staff, public hearings in the areas where schools might be located, and a review of any public comments offered to the Department either in writing or at public hearings. The Board of Education will vote on recommended charter school applications in February of 2008.

The proposed schools invited to submit full applications are:

Dorchester Collegiate Academy Charter School, serving students in grades 4-12 from Boston. Enrollment capacity: 270.

Gateway Collegiate Academy Charter School, serving students in grades 6-12 from Boston. Enrollment capacity: 340.

Hampden Charter School of Science, serving students in grades 6-12 from Chicopee, Ludlow, Springfield and West Springfield. Enrollment capacity: 350.

Silver Hill Horace Mann Charter School, serving students from Haverhill. Enrollment capacity: 580.

SABIS International Charter School of Southeast Massachusetts, servings students in grades K-12 from Avon, Abington, Bridgewater, Brockton, East Bridgewater, Easton, Hanson, Holbrook, Middleborough, Randolph, Stoughton, West Bridgewater, Weymouth, and Whitman. Enrollment capacity: 1,300.
