Date:September 22, 2007

Massachusetts is now participating in the Character Education Partnership's State Schools of Character Awards Program. Connected to the Partnership's National Schools of Character, the state program will recognize schools and districts for their outstanding work in character education and provide exemplary sites within Massachusetts to serve as models for other educators. The Hudson Public School District (National District of Character 2001), with Boston University's Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character Education, will conduct the application process and provide technical assistance. Schools that have been engaged in character education for a minimum of three full years and districts that have been engaged in character education for a minimum of four full years are eligible to apply. Application information is available on the Hudson Public School District website, www.hudson.k12.ma.us, and applications are due on December 3, 2007. Massachusetts State Schools of Character will be recognized at the spring conference of Boston University's Center for the Advancement of Ethics and Character. One or more selected Massachusetts applications will be advanced to the National Schools of Character in February. Those schools will be eligible to be designated as National Schools of Character. NSOC award recipients will receive a $20,000 grant: $10,000 to enhance their program and $10,000 to provide outreach to other educators. For additional information contact Mary H. McCarthy, Director of Community Relations and Character Education, mmccarthy@hudson.k12.ma.us, 978-567-6107.
