The Department has scheduled QMT training and qualification sessions for new and existing QMTs on the following dates. The purpose of these workshops is to train and qualify QMTs using MELA-O training and qualifying materials developed in 2007.

Training/Training DatesEligible ParticipantsLength of Training
February 3, 2009 or
May 8, 2009
Existing QMTs who originally qualified prior to 2007 and have not yet attended a retraining sessionOne day
8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
April 13-14New QMTs in districts currently without a QMTTwo days
Both: 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m.

Registration is on a first-come, first-served basis, and is limited to 40 participants per session. QMTs identified for initial training or retraining must register at http://www.mcasservicecenter.com/. The training will be held in the metropolitan Boston area. Details will be sent following registration.

Please review the status of existing QMTs from your district and consider whether any who are not yet requalified need to attend a QMT retraining session. If your district is currently without a QMT, you may register a designee to attend a two-day training session for new QMTs. A list containing the names of your district's QMTs is available on the Department's website at www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/mepa/testadmin/melao_lep.html.

As a reminder, districts are responsible for ensuring that the MELA-O is administered annually to all LEP students in grades K-12 and that results are reported, as appropriate, to the state. Districts must ensure that at least one QMT is available to train a sufficient number of qualified MELA-O administrators (QMA) in the district to conduct the MELA-O. QMTs and QMAs who originally qualified prior to 2007 must pass a new qualifying test by January 31, 2010, in order to continue to conduct MELA-O for the purpose of reporting scores to the state for the Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment.

Thank you for your attention to this information. If you have any questions, please contact the MCAS Service Center at 800-737-5103 or the Student Assessment office at 781-338-3625, or by email at mcas@doe.mass.edu.
