Notice on Title I ARRA Numbers

To:Superintendents and Charter School Leaders
From:Mitchell D. Chester, Commissioner of Elementary and Secondary Education
Date:April 3, 2009

Many of you have requested updates on the Title I allocations that will be coming through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA) funding. Although distribution amounts are posted on the U.S. Department of Education's website, I recommend you not rely on them because they are incomplete. We are working on a calculation of final Title I allocation numbers, and expect to have them ready for release next week. There will be discrepancies between the list posted by USED and our final list for three reasons: 1) The list posted by USED does not include charter schools or vocational technical schools; 2) The USED list does not take into account the ARRA set-asides for school improvement and administration; and 3) The ARRA Title I criteria require that the money not go to all Title I districts, but rather to the highest-poverty Title I districts. For the reasons identified above, the amounts posted by USED earlier this week are not accurate, and will be, in some cases, significantly reduced. I will update you as soon as more information is available.
