Twenty-two Massachusetts school districts have been awarded $1,484,399 as part of the USDA Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) to provide support to elementary schools with 50% or more of students eligible for free or reduced-price meals. The program is designed to expand fruit and vegetable consumption outside school meal service. Individual school awards range from of $2,175 to $220,875. Nutrition personnel in these 28 schools will work with staff and administration to increase access for nearly 22,000 students to fresh fruits and vegetables by offering fruits and vegetables during the school day, promoting sound health and nutrition, and thus contribute to reducing overweight and obesity.
