I am pleased to make available two new resources for educators who serve students who are limited English proficient (LEP). These publications provide guidance on interpreting and using the results of the Massachusetts English Proficiency Assessment (MEPA) to improve the English language proficiency and academic achievement of English language learners. They are available as follows: - Guide to Interpreting the 2009 MEPA Reports for Schools and Districts, which explains the results and other information contained in the Parent/Guardian Report, the Roster of Student Results, the Preliminary Participation Report, and the Preliminary Results by Year of Enrollment in Massachusetts Schools for the spring 2009 MEPA tests. The guide is intended to assist you in reviewing your 2009 spring MEPA school- and district-level results, which were posted to www.mcasservicecenter.com on September 9, and will be shipped to schools on September 17.
- Guidance on Using MEPA Results to Plan Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Instruction and Make Reclassification Decisions for Limited English Proficient (LEP) Students, which provides guidance to assist educators in using MEPA results and other relevant data to make appropriate decisions regarding the instruction and reclassification of English language learners. This guidance was updated for 2009 from a similar publication in use since 2005.
It is critical to ensure the acquisition of English by LEP students so that they can engage meaningfully in the full academic curriculum. I urge you to use your students' MEPA results to support this important goal. Thank you for your attention to this information. | Guidance on Using MEPA Results to Plan Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) Instruction and Make Reclassification Decisions for Limited English Proficient (LEP) Students (September 2009) | | Guide to Interpreting the 2009 MEPA Reports for Schools and Districts (September 2009) |
