US Census 2010

February 25, 2010 Dear Program Directors, Career Centers, LWIB Partners, and Teacher/All Staff, As I am sure you are aware, the 2010 Census begins in March. I hope you will help your staff and students understand that the state count in this national effort has an impact on the federal grant funds Massachusetts receives, as well as on our congressional representation. It's very important to have participation from as many people as possible. The Commissioner has posted a message that asks schools to designate March 1-5, 2010 as Census in Schools Week. I am asking you to do the same in your programs. The Census Bureau Fact sheet provides an overview of the census that can help explain the census to your students. It can be found at http://www.census.gov/schools/pdf/Census_Fact_Sheet.pdf. Interactive materials for teachers and students (K-12) are available at www.census.gov/schools. Although this information pertains mainly to K-12, there are many interesting teaching lessons / materials that can be utilized for our ABE learners. We'd love to hear about activities you have planned to make your students aware of the importance of filling out the Census forms. Sincerely, With Literacy in Mind.
