Supplementary Support/Title III Grants for Content-Based ESL Curriculum Development and Instruction

The Office of English Language Acquisition and Academic Achievement of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) makes available applications for supplementary Title III grants for the following specific purpose:
Participation of teams of district staff in the Content-Based ESL Curriculum Development and Instruction held on July 14 and 15, 2010, follow-up work, and follow-up session July 22, 2010. Teams will plan and begin to develop a curricular unit focused on one grade span (K-2, 3-4, 5-6, 7-8, 9-12) or grade level. Participants will leave the final meeting with a useable product that can be piloted during ESL instructional time in the upcoming school year.
Participants will become familiar with the online Guide for Developing a Content-Based English as a Second Language Curriculum. Exemplars, templates and other resources that are part of the Guide will be explored and used by participants to support them in their purposeful planning and development of content-based ESL instruction. Participants will also begin work on a content-based ESL unit for students at a particular grade span. Participants will have approximately one week to complete the work they have started before attending a half-day follow-up meeting where they will share their finished products.
Eligible applicants are listed below. These districts have submitted applications to and been accepted by an ESE screening and evaluation process for this workshop. These districts will be eligible to apply for the following amounts:
- Fitchburg Public Schools $5000
- Peabody Public Schools $5000
- Milton Public Schools $5000
- Diman Regional Vocational Technical High School $5000
- Fall River Public Schools $5000
- Needham Public Schools $5000
- Franklin Public Schools $5000
- Saugus Public Schools $5000
The Department will provide eligible applicants with necessary Fund Code 184 grant materials via email. Districts must submit a proposed budget workbook as well as a short narrative describing the intended use of the funds (e.g., stipends for participation, travel, materials, etc.) Proposals for use of the funds must follow all Title III requirements.
Funds must be spent between July 1, 2010 and September 30, 2010. Hard copies of district proposals, including the budget workbook (signed by appropriate district staff) and program narrative, must be sent to the Office of Language Acquisition and Academic Achievement by July 8, 2010.
