Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS)

Teachers' Task Force Invitation - Deadline Extended

November 29, 2012 Dear ABE Teacher: The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, Adult and Community Learning Services (ACLS) invites you to apply to participate in a Teachers' Task Force facilitated by Damon Douglas (Collaborative for Educational Services) in collaboration with ACLS. We are looking for teachers committed to providing high quality and effective ABE services. The Task Force will provide guidance to ACLS in the development of new policies in support of the ABE Strategic Goals outlined in Facing the Future (http://www.doe.mass.edu/acls/sp/FacingTheFuture.pdf), in particular, policies designed to increase the effectiveness and quality of the Massachusetts ABE system. The participants will have opportunities to discuss and provide input regarding policies designed to increase academic rigor, validate adult instructor proficiency in the content area(s) in which they teach, create career ladders for teachers in ABE, and enhance working conditions that support teaching and learning. We are interested in having teachers from a variety of programs and educational backgrounds. We seek participants interested in contributing solutions to the challenges involved in preparing students for college and careers facing the field today. As a member of the task force, you will read background research and policy drafts in preparation for meetings; discuss the impact on teachers and students, implementation strategies, and propose ways to improve the policies. The Teachers' Task Force will meet starting January 4, 2013 on six Fridays from 10am-4pm in Central Massachusetts. Task Force participants are expected to attend all 6 meetings and complete reading homework assignments between meetings. Task Force members will receive a stipend of $240 per meeting.
