ELL Assessment Update - Upcoming ACCESS for ELLs Test Administration
|To:||Principals and District English Language Learner (ELL) Program Directors|
|From:||Dan Wiener, Administrator of Inclusive Assessment|
|Date:||December 14, 2012|
Greetings! I want to provide you with important information as you prepare to administer ACCESS for ELLs tests between January 10 and February 13, 2013.
Delivery of Test Materials and Test Scheduling
ACCESS for ELLs test materials will arrive on January 3 in schools that ordered test materials on or before November 30. The Department encourages schools to begin assigning test administrators and students to testing spaces prior to the upcoming holidays, and determine which ELLs with disabilities will require test accommodations.
Review the ACCESS for ELLs Test Administration Manual (TAM) and the Massachusetts Supplement to the TAM on the ESE website.
The ACCESS for ELLs TAM outlines general testing procedures, including important information about:
- test materials handling,
- test scheduling and coordination, and
- procedures for administering group-administered (Reading, Writing, and Listening) and individually-administered (Speaking and Kindergarten) tests.
The Massachusetts Supplement to the TAM contains specific test administration instructions for Massachusetts schools about:
- completing test booklets for students with and without student labels,
- completing test booklets for ELL students with disabilities who received test accommodations,
- completing test booklets for ELL students who do not take one or more sections of the test,
- contact information for WIDA, MetriTech, and the Department.
The TAM and the Massachusetts supplement are available on the ESE website at http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/access/.
Ensure that test administrators are trained and certified to administer ACCESS for ELLs tests.
Educators are required to complete an online training course and pass a certification quiz in order to be authorized to administer ACCESS for ELLs tests. It is the principal's responsibility to assign individuals to serve as test administrators, and to ensure that they have completed the required training and certification. A score of 80 percent or higher is required on certification quizzes. Please refer to test administrator training and certification procedures at http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/access/training-certification.html.
Principals and ELL directors can monitor the certification status of test administrators in their district through the "district view" feature in their WIDA personal training account to ensure that a sufficient number of test administrators have been certified to administer the tests. See the email sent to you by WIDA for instructions on using your password to create a personal account; or review this information at http://www.doe.mass.edu/news/news.aspx?id=7135.
Ordering Additional Test Materials
Please count the number of tests when they arrive on January 3. No overage will be provided in your shipment. Principals may order additional test materials until February 6, 2013 for students who arrived in schools after the initial order was placed. To order additional materials, call the MetriTech Help Desk at 800-747-4868.
Student Transfer Form
If a student takes part of the ACCESS for ELLs test in one school and transfers to or from another school in Massachusetts, a Student Transfer Form must be completed by both schools. The form must be returned to MetriTech with the student's test booklet to ensure that results are reported accurately. The Student Transfer Form is available on the MetriTech website at http://www.metritech.com/wida/login.aspx.
ELL Assessment Updates Now Posted on the ACCESS for ELLs Web Page
If you did not receive an earlier edition of the ELL Assessment Update, all updates since July 2012 are now posted to the Department's website at http://www.doe.mass.edu/mcas/access/ell-updates.html. ELL Assessment Updates are sent periodically to ELL directors and principals to provide important information and reminders about ELL student assessment, including:
- accessing the W-APT screener test,
- passwords to WIDA accounts to obtain secure materials,
- test administrator training and certification, and
- ordering test materials and monitoring test administrator training.
If you have further questions about administering ACCESS for ELLs tests, please contact Paulette Watson at firstname.lastname@example.org or 781-338-3625.
Thank you for your attention to this information and have a relaxing holiday.
