2012-2013 Innovation Schools Update

We would like to provide you with an update regarding items related to Innovation Schools planned by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (ESE) in collaboration with the Executive Office of Education (EOE). This memo summarizes upcoming activities and events for the remainder of this school year.

FY14 Innovation Schools Enhancement Grant

The remaining $120,000 Race to the Top (RTTT) funds allocated for Innovation Schools will be awarded through the issuance of a one-time Innovation Schools Enhancement Grant (Fund Code 202-A). The purpose of this grant is to provide support for approved Innovation Schools that are currently implementing their Innovation School Plans in participating Massachusetts' RTTT districts to: (1) plan for sustainable expanded learning time strategies by redesigning the daily school schedule and school year calendar, and/or (2) provide targeted professional development activities aligned to the schools approved Innovation School Plan.   1. Monday, April 29, 2013, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m. – Grant Information Webinar

    The grant information webinar is intended to provide prospective applicants with information related to this funding opportunity. Discussion will include the purpose of this one-time funding opportunity as well as an overview of all required documents. There will be ample opportunity for participants to ask questions and receive additional clarification about this RFP. Please register at:

  2. Friday, May 3, 2013, 5:00 p.m. – Intent to Apply Email

    The non-binding intent to apply email is due on Friday, May 3, 2013 by 5:00 p.m. Emails should be sent to Sheika Edmond at

    Full grant applications are due to ESE on Friday, May 17, 2013 by 5:00 p.m.

Closeout of FY13 Fund Codes 155, 202, and 203 Innovation Schools Grant Funds

Note, applicable only to recipients of FY13 Fund Code 155, Next Generation Learning Models Implementation Grants; FY13 Fund Code 202 Race to the Top Planning Grant; and FY13 Fund Code 203 Race to the Top Implementation Grant.

The project duration for the grants listed above conclude on August 31, 2013. All grant recipients must submit a Final Financial Form (FR1) to ESE no later than 60 days from the end of the grant program. Grant contacts are encouraged to work with your budget offices to ensure the submission of this required report. Progress and Performance Index (PPI) Data Webinar Trainings

ESE has planned two upcoming opportunities for you and your staff to learn more about the new State Accountability System. The trainings are intended to provide information about how to interpret the Progress and Performance Index (PPI) and how it informs the Accountability and Assistance Levels assigned to each school and district. The webinar trainings are scheduled for Wednesday, May 1, 2013 and Wednesday, May 22, 2013 from 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Please register at:

Innovation Schools Network Events

Four Innovation Schools Network Events were scheduled for this Spring and Summer. Thank you to those of you that attended the events held at Carlton Innovation School and Fitchburg McKay Arts Academy Innovation School. Please note that the Innovation Schools Network Roundtable at the Boston Foundation, scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 2013 has been cancelled. We will be sure to provide you with information if the event is rescheduled. The remaining Network event is the:

Innovation Schools Legislative Report

As many of you know, ESE and EOE are in the process of finalizing the 2013 Innovation Schools Legislative Report, "Implementation and Fiscal Impact of Innovation Schools." Thank you to those schools that were operating in 2011-2012 and were required to submit information for the report. We will let you know when the document is released.
