Further information on data in the Edwin Student Learning Experience Report

Tutorial videos: DESE highly recommends that users view the following videos on using the report:

Risk ratio: The SLE Report compares the rates at which groups of students have been assigned to different types of teachers. Risk ratios show the difference in the rate at which a historically disadvantaged group was assigned to a teacher with the given characteristic, compared to students not in that group. A risk ratio of 1.5 means that the historically disadvantaged student group has been assigned to a certain type of teacher 50 percent more often than, or 1.5 times as often as, their peers. Risk ratios of 1.5 or higher indicate equity gaps and appear red on the SLE Report. For more information, view Video 1: Interpreting and Using Summary Reports. Risk ratios are based on non-rounded percentages of student experiences. In the case when the denominator is zero percent of experiences (non-rounded), Edwin converts the zero to a one, to generate a risk ratio. Users should check percentages when reviewing risk ratios.

Learning experience definition: A learning experience is generated each time a student has a class on their schedule with that teacher.

All teachers assigned to a student's class through the Student Course Schedule (SCS) data collection are included in the report view for the student. If a student has multiple classes with the same teacher, each class is counted as an 'experience.' If a student has multiple teachers in the same class, each teacher assigned to the class is counted as an 'experience.' Aggregate views are the sum of learning experiences for all the students that meet the criteria for the row. (For example: Student A has 3 classes, one of which has 2 teachers (4 learning experiences). Student B has 5 classes each with a single teacher (5 learning experiences). Student C has one elementary class that is split into 4 classes with the same teacher (4 learning experiences). Aggregated together in the same row, these students collectively have 13 learning experiences).

In-field teachers: Teachers who hold the appropriate license for a course, as of Oct. 1, are considered in-field teachers for that learning experience. For more information on teachers who are out-of-field, see Out of Field Teacher Assignments (SE821) in Edwin.

Course and student reporting: Learning experiences include classes for students who were assigned to the educator's classroom as of the end of year. Data comes from the Student Course Schedule (SCS) data collection, counting those experiences with either a Completed or Incomplete enrollment status, excluding classes with an enrollment status of Withdrawn or Excused for Medical Reasons. Note that districts have different ways of defining a class in the Student Course Schedule (SCS) data collection. For example some elementary schools use 'Core All' which counts as one class, while others break the day into separate classes for ELA, mathematics, science, and social studies, which would count as four classes.

The report includes students enrolled in the district in Grade 02 or higher during the current school year. The data are aggregated twice during the school year: once early in the year using teacher evaluations from two years prior (and earlier), and a second time mid-year using teacher evaluations from the prior school year (and earlier). In both cases, the latest SIMS enrollment data is supplemented with the latest student claiming data.
