Finance and Funding

In recent years, Massachusetts has invested approximately $16 billion a year in our public schools through a mixture of federal, state, and local contributions. Since 2007, even during the Great Recession, education spending in our state has steadily increased.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education's budget alone is a little more than $5 billion, and 99 percent of that goes directly to districts in the form of grants, local aid, and special education reimbursements.

The links below include information about the Chapter 70 program, the main source of state education aid to districts; charter school funding; regional districts; and food and nutrition grants and programs. District administrators can also find information about accounting and auditing and school finance regulations.
