Professional Development and Technical Assistance Offerings 2008-2009

The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education - Career/Vocational Technical Education unit is pleased to provide the following information on professional development and technical assistance directly related to career/vocational technical education. Eastern Seaboard Apprenticeship Conference - This conference hosted by the Massachusetts Department of Workforce Development Division of Apprentice Training (DAT) will be held May 25 - 29, 2009 in Boston. Educators, especially those involved with career/vocational technical education on the secondary and postsecondary level are encouraged to attend. Occupational Safety Training for Teachers in Chapter 74-Approved Vocational Technical Education Programs in Culinary Arts, Dental Assisting, Heath Assisting, and Medical Assisting - Sessions conducted by experts from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health through a grant from the Massachusetts Division of Industrial Accidents will be provided statewide. Perkins Career and Technical Education Improvement Act Five-Year Local Plans will be sponsored by the Career/Vocational Technical Education unit on March 18, 2009. School Admission under Chapter 74 - Technical assistance sessions on admissions in Chapter 74-approved vocational technical education for staff from districts with Chapter 74-approved vocational technical education programs will be provided by the Career/Vocational Technical Education unit. Additional information is posted at http://www.doe.mass.edu/news/news.aspx?id=4290 School Admission under Chapter 74 - Technical assistance sessions on admissions in Chapter 74-approved vocational technical education for staff from districts (middle schools) without Chapter 74-approved vocational technical education programs will be provided by the Career/Vocational Technical Education unit. Additional information is posted at http://www.doe.mass.edu/news/news.aspx?id=4277 Using Technology for Career Planning - The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the National Center for School Counseling Outcome Research will provide a statewide conference on the use of technology to support effective and meaningful career planning on March 26, 2009. Technical Assistance on School Climate - A contractor will provide technical assistance to school districts and public two-year colleges that are assisted with Perkins Act funds on creating a positive school/college climate regarding gender, sexual orientation, race, color, national origin, and disability status. A major goal is for students including those interested in a career that would be nontraditional for their gender to be safe and supported. School district/public two-year college/consortium staff should contact their liaison for assistance in implementing Chapter 74 and the Perkins Act.
