Massachusetts Education Collaboratives

About Massachusetts Education Collaboratives

Formed through an agreement among two or more local school committees and/or charter school boards under the provisions of Chapter 40, Section 4E, education collaboratives provide programming that supplements and strengthens the programs and services offered by local school committees and charter school boards. All education collaborative agreements and amendments must be approved by the local school committees, charter school boards and the Massachusetts Board of Elementary and Secondary Education. Once approved, the local school committees and/or charter school boards are recognized as members of the collaborative.

Education collaboratives have operated in Massachusetts for over 50 years. In the early 1970's, the term "collaborative" was used to describe a variety of different mechanisms through which local school systems supplemented or strengthened their regular school program by joining together to conduct educational programs, to share resources and/or to provide cost-effective services for the participating districts.
