Regional Centers for Emergency License Support

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) has selected five Regional Licensure Assistance Centers to provide targeted support to emergency license holders working in Massachusetts and to the schools and districts employing these emergency licensed educators. Located throughout the state, each center supports candidates as they work to convert their emergency licenses to a provisional or initial license.

The selected regional centers include:

  • Westfield State University / Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts Region 1: Western MA, supporting emergency license holders working in the Berkshire, Franklin, Hampshire, and Hampden counties
  • Stonehill College — Region 2: Central MA, supporting emergency license holders working in the Worcester and Middlesex counties
  • Bridgewater State University — Region 3: Southeast MA, supporting emergency license holders working in the Norfolk, Bristol, Plymouth, Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties
  • Class Measures — Region 4: Boston, supporting emergency license holders working in Suffolk county
  • Salem State — Region 5: Metro North, supporting emergency license holders working in Essex County

Each Regional Licensure Assistance Center provides wraparound and individualized support to emergency license holders currently employed in a Massachusetts school. This includes:

  • Support in accessing the MTEL, including navigating the MTEL registration process; requesting alternative arrangements when needed; and disseminating knowledge about the alternative approved assessments to the MTEL available through the MTEL regulatory pilot;
  • MTEL preparation through either vouchers to access MTEL preparation outside the vendor, and/or in-house MTEL preparation.
  • Customized licensure support in understanding and managing the licensure process;
  • Outreach to individual districts with high proportions of emergency license holders in the vendor's specific region, including visits to the school/district to provide technical assistance and support; and
  • Outreach and check-ins with individual candidates to support customized and differentiated supports.

The selected regional centers may also have additional customized offerings to the unique needs of their region. Please reach out to the Center in the county in which you are employed on an emergency license.
