Guidebook Partners work session, May 31, 2016

Over the course of the 2015-16 school year, DESE partnered with 128 educators in 32 organizations to provide ongoing feedback on the tools of the Educator Effectiveness Guidebook for Inclusive Practice. The Guidebook Partners used and reviewed the tools of the Guidebook in district level teams that ranged in size from one to twelve and were composed of educators in roles that ranged from special education administrators, principals, teachers, and specialized instructional support personnel to college faculty and superintendents. They represented all grade levels and worked with students in rural, suburban, and urban districts, charter schools, and vocational technical programs. The common thread was their commitment to providing an inclusive educational environment for all of the students in their care.

The Guidebook Partners provided detailed feedback on each tool according to the following general criteria: how great would its impact be on instruction and how usable was its format and content. The teams provided a range of quantitative and qualitative input about each tool, including a description of how each tool was used (i.e. in collaborative planning, classroom walkthroughs, evidence collection for educator evaluation, or during professional development) and suggestions for additional content and resources.

Based on an analysis of this feedback, DESE convened a smaller group of Guidebook Partners and members of the original group of Guidebook authors to revise tools that were poorly rated and to fill in missing pieces in the Guidebook's overall structure. Their work on May 31st, 2016, was then reviewed by DESE staff and incorporated into the overall Guidebook website in September of 2016. The following revisions/additions were made to the resource:

New Tools
  • Principal Self-Assessment
  • Power Elements for Inclusion: MA Superintendent Rubric
  • SEL Lesson Planning Tool
  • Communicating about Inclusion
  • Job-Embedded Professional Development Planning Guide
  • Quick Tips for Guidebook Professional Development
Revised Tools
  • Teacher Self-Assessment
  • Student Feedback Discussion Protocol
  • Accessibility Review Tool
  • Considering Growth: Setting Parameters
  • Staff Feedback Discussion Protocol
  • Superintendent Self-Assessment

DESE strives to provide the highest quality resources possible. To submit feedback or comments on the impact and usability of the tools, please email educatordevelopment@doe.mass.edu .
