Office of Educator Licensure

Upcoming Deadline to Apply for and Obtain an Emergency License

Sunday, December 12, 2021, will be the last day in which an individual can apply for and/or be issued an Emergency license. Governor Baker signed special legislation, Chapter 92 of the Acts of 2020, creating the Emergency license which was primarily designed to support aspiring educators looking to join the profession and educator pipeline and for school districts looking to bring on new hires. The legislation indicates that "the Commissioner may issue emergency educator licenses during the period of the state of emergency and for a period of 180 days after the termination of the state of emergency."

The deadline of December 12th is definitive, meaning that no additional Emergency licenses will be granted after December 12, 2021. In addition to submitting an application, all required supporting documents required to issue the Emergency license need to be on file in Educator Licensure and Renewal (ELAR) and reviewed by the Licensure Office in order to be granted the license. Any supporting documents received after midnight Sunday; December 12th cannot be accepted towards the granting of the Emergency license. Therefore, the Department encourages individuals interested in earning an Emergency license to apply and upload all supporting documents into their ELAR account as soon as possible and ideally, prior to the close of business on Friday, December 10th.

Licensure Office staff will be reviewing applications on both Saturday, December 11th and Sunday, December 12th, to ensure timely reviews; however, the Licensure Call Center (781-338-6600) will maintain its normal hours of Monday–Friday from 9:00 am–1:00 pm and 2:00 pm–5:00 pm.

If you have any concerns about applying for or submitting documents, please call the Call Center at the above noted times. All Emergency licenses are valid until June 30, 2022.
