Brief Description of Services
Founded in 2009 by award-winning Boston artist and teacher Damon Lehrer, the Boston Figurative Art Center is a new model of artists’ cooperative focused primarily on figure drawing and painting. Located at 6 Vernon Street in Somerville, MA, and offering classes in several other locations, the center offers a variety of regularly scheduled sessions including classic shorter pose life drawing and long pose painting or drawing sessions (where the same pose is held during an entire 3-hour class or over a series of meetings). While attending sessions, artists and participants discuss their work with other participants, and provide each other feedback, in a respectful and supportive manner. In addition to uninstructed drawing and painting sessions, the BFAC offers classes run by various artists in month-long units, as well as single or multiple-day workshops. Instruction in figure and still life painting in oils, as well as “Drawing as Meditation” classes to help students learn to use the practice of drawing to calm their minds. Many of these offerings could provide Professional Development Points for K-12 teachers. In addition to encouraging the serious practice of art, BFAC is a welcoming community that organizes various social and travel events.
