Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Student Leadership Council

What is the LGBTQ+ Student Leadership Council?

The Massachusetts LGBTQ+ Student Leadership Council brings together high school students from across the Commonwealth to strengthen advocacy skills, shape inclusive school policies and practices, and build learning environments where all students-especially LGBTQ+ youth-feel seen, valued, and supported.

Council members design and lead projects that create meaningful change in their local schools, districts, and regions. The Council includes one statewide body and five regional councils, each working to cultivate youth leadership, elevate student voices, and foster community across Massachusetts.

The Council brings together students in grades 9–12 from every region of Massachusetts to strengthen advocacy and leadership skills, shape inclusive school policies and practices, and contribute to statewide efforts that support LGBTQ+ students and families. Members collaborate with peers, educators, and community partners to design and lead projects that create meaningful change in their local schools, districts, and regions.

All regional meetings are open to both middle and high school students, ensuring that students across developmental stages can build community, learn, and lead. In addition, at least two regional meetings each year are intentionally designed to engage and support middle school students, offering developmentally appropriate leadership pathways and opportunities for younger students to connect with the Council's work.

Applications for the Council open annually. Even when the application window is not active, students and advisors are encouraged to explore upcoming opportunities, events, and future application timelines by contacting us at SafeSchoolsProgram@mass.gov .
