Facts about Turnaround Schools

Why Teach in a Turnaround School?
Turnaround School Opportunities

Turnaround Schools are designated Level 4 schools based on several factors: the students have underperformed on the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) over a four-year period in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics, and the schools don't exhibit signs of substantial improvement over that time. Schools designated Level 4 must undertake an accelerated process for rapid and sustainable achievement within three years.

There are also Level 5 schools, the most serious category in Massachusetts' accountability system, representing the need for further intervention by the state. Learn more about Massachusetts' framework for district accountability and assistance.

Current Situation:

  • Over 30 schools in 9 districts are currently designated as Level 4 schools. There are 4 schools in 3 districts that have been designated Level 5.

  • Most schools have students that are from racially and ethnically diverse backgrounds.

  • Each school must develop Turnaround Plans in collaboration with the Superintendent, School Committee, teachers' union, administrators, teachers, community representatives, and parents.

  • Federal School Redesign Grant funds are available to these schools.
