The Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE), Office for Food and Nutrition Programs (FNP) supports Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) operators by providing training and resources on program regulation and policy, along with administrative and operational best practices. This memo includes a detailed list of training opportunities scheduled for fiscal year 2027 (FY27).

DESE is expanding the availability of live training opportunities (virtual and in-person), on-demand training modules, and complementary training resources to support adult learners and increase availability of learning for a variety of schedules. Please read through the entire memo about all the training and resource offerings this fiscal year.

CACFP Sponsors are required to provide a minimum of two (2) hours of CACFP training to their staff annually. Civil Rights training is also required annually for all staff in the CACFP but does not count toward the 2-hour CACFP training requirement. Sponsors should utilize the available resources in the Document and Reference Library to train staff on topics relevant to their roles and responsibilities or encourage staff to attend live training opportunities to meet this requirement. Sponsors should consider if any complementary materials or resources containing sponsor-specific policies or practices should be provided to staff.

Additionally, the designated "CACFP Responsible Contact(s)"; is/are required to participate in CACFP training provided by the MA State Agency (DESE) each year. Each sponsoring organization is responsible for ensuring that the individual(s) listed as their CACFP Responsible Contact(s) is registered/has attended a MA DESE training and has received sufficient training to oversee the program in compliance with federal and state regulations.

DateTopic & Registration LinkTraining Description
August 26th FY27 Application Training This training will detail what is required of programs to submit a completed application and highlight changes to the application packet for FY27, including what it means to be in a "multi-year"; application year, where not all components are required to be completed and how sponsors can make amendments or updates as needed.
September 2nd Understanding CACFP Eligibility Eligibility is an essential part of all CACFP programs. Understanding what is needed to document, assess, and consolidate eligibility data will help set your program up for successful and accurate claiming. This event will also include breakout sessions for each type of CACFP program to discuss the specifics of eligibility for those site types and highlight relevant resources available to programs.
*Tuesday, September 8th Meal Pattern Series — From Bottles to Bites: Feeding Infants in the CACFP Infants are the youngest participants in the CACFP but can also be the most challenging to serve. This training will review the infant meal pattern, including creditable and non-creditable foods. You'll also learn how to document meals for reimbursement and communicate with families about feeding preferences and developmental readiness.
September 9th Meal Pattern Series — From Toddlers to Teens: Serving Children 1–18 years old in the CACFP Toddlers and school-age children bring their own unique needs to the CACFP meal pattern — and knowing the differences between the two age groups is key to serving them well. This training will review the meal pattern requirements for toddlers and school-age youth, including creditable foods, portion sizes, and what counts toward a reimbursable meal. You'll also explore common compliance pitfalls and practical strategies for planning menus that meet requirements without sacrificing quality.
*Thursday, September 10th Meal Pattern Series — Full Days, Full Plates: Feeding Adults in the CACFP Serving adults requires the same attention to meal pattern requirements as any other age group. This training will review the adult meal pattern, including creditable foods, portion sizes, and what it takes to build a reimbursable meal. You'll also learn how documentation and menu planning for adults may differ from other age groups in your program.
September 16th Crediting with Confidence: Documenting Creditable Foods with CN Labels, PFS, and Standardized Recipes Not all food items are created equal within the CACFP, and many need documentation to demonstrate how they credit towards the meal pattern. In this training, we will discuss how program operators can determine if a food item is creditable and identify the key to documenting how you credit the food items. This event will review Child Nutrition Labels, Product Formulation Statements, and standardized recipes in depth and provide resources for finding or defining that documentation. There will be interactive elements to apply your learning during this training, so come ready to engage!
September 23rd Serving Success: Meal Service Style Options in the CACFP Meal service in the CACFP goes beyond what's on the plate. Different styles of congregate meal service (unitized or pre-plated meals, family style, or offer versus serve) are appropriate for different types of sites and age groups. Each meal service style provides its own set of benefits and comes with its own requirements for documentation. This training will detail each style of meal service, and what is required of sponsors utilizing each.
