All districts that are not excepted from District (LEA)-level maintenance of equity requirements were required to sign an assurance that their high-poverty schools are protected from any reduction of per-pupil funding by an amount that exceeds the overall per-pupil reduction in the LEA. This assurance appeared in the ESSER-III grant application , and it specifically listed "high poverty" schools within that district (those schools in the highest poverty quartile), so that districts were aware of the schools for which they needed to maintain equity.
As data become available, the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education will compare school-level spending over time to verify that LEA-level assurances have been met. If any adjustments are necessary at the district level, the state will engage with the district immediately to determine a corrective action plan, most likely to occur in the current fiscal year, if possible (and, if not possible, then by the start of the subsequent fiscal year).
