Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program School Year 2024-2025

To:School Food Authorities operating the National School Lunch Program
From:Robert Leshin, Director
Office for Food and Nutrition Programs
Date:February 27, 2024

The Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program (FFVP) is a federal program available to School Food Authorities (SFA) that administer the National School Lunch Program in elementary schools where greater than 50% of enrolled students are eligible for free and reduced price meals. The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) defines elementary school as having grade one. The goal of FFVP is to introduce children to fresh fruits and vegetables, to include new and different varieties, and to increase overall acceptance and consumption of fresh, unprocessed produce among children. FFVP also encourages healthier school environments by promoting nutrition education. New this year, eligible SFAs will be invited to apply for FFVP for the school year 2024-2025 through DESE's Security Portal. Detailed instructions on how to apply or decline are available in the Document and Reference Library section of DESE's Security Portal.

To apply, a complete application includes:

  1. A commitment to the program to start the first week of school by the superintendent, school principal, and school cafeteria manager.
  2. A complete and submitted application for each eligible school the SFA is applying for.
  3. A signature page uploaded for each school's application.

To decline: Eligible schools are not required to apply. If an SFA does not intend to apply for an eligible school, "set selected schools to not applying" in FFV application packet.

Technical assistance available: in Office Hours for School Meal Programs, hosted on the 3rd Tuesday of the month at 2:00 pm.

  • March 19th will provide an overview of the FFVP program requirements.
  • April 16th will provide technical assistance completing the application.

Applications are due by 5:00pm Wednesday, May 1, 2024:
Late applications cannot be considered. Please Note: The selection process will be completed pending available funding for the program. For questions, please contact Kelly Burke via FFVP@mass.gov .

This institution is an equal opportunity provider.
