Question 3: Constructed-Response
no calculator allowed
Reporting Category: Number and Operations-Fractions
Standard: Mathematics.4.NF.C.07 - Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two decimals refer to the same whole. Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions, e.g., by using a visual model.
Item Description: Compare decimals given in tenths and hundredths in a list, order decimals from least to greatest, and determine which decimal from the list is closest in value to a given decimal.

Scoring Guide and Sample Student Work

Select a score point in the table below to view the sample student response.

ScoreDescription
4 The student response demonstrates an exemplary understanding of the Number and Operations-Fractions concepts involved in comparing two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. The student correctly uses place value to compare decimals and explains the reasoning of their comparisons.
4
3 The student response demonstrates a good understanding of the Number and Operations-Fractions concepts involved in comparing two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. Although there is significant evidence that the student was able to recognize and apply the concepts involved, some aspect of the response is flawed. As a result, the response merits 3 points.
2 The student response demonstrates a fair understanding of the Number and Operations-Fractions concepts involved in comparing two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. While some aspects of the task are completed correctly, others are not. The mixed evidence provided by the student merits 2 points.
1 The student response demonstrates a minimal understanding of the Number and Operations-Fractions concepts involved in comparing two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size.
0 The student response contains insufficient evidence of an understanding of the Number and Operations-Fractions concepts involved in comparing two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size to merit any points.
Note: There are 2 sample student responses for Score Point 4.
