To qualify for a first Initial license in Massachusetts as a; core academic teacher, principal/assistant principal, or supervisor/director, an educator must hold a Sheltered English Immersion endorsement. The autism endorsement is a voluntary endorsement indicating that the educator has acquired specialized knowledge and skill enabling them to meet the unique and complex educational needs of students on the Autism Spectrum.
A transition specialist provides transition services to students with disabilities with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The endorsement provides recognition of a particular set of skills and knowledge in relation to transitioning to adult life for students with IEPs.
On November 2017, the Language Opportunity for Our Kids Act (LOOK Act) was signed into law. The new law, among other things, aims to provide districts with more flexibility as to the language acquisition programs they choose to meet the needs of English Learners (ELs), while maintaining accountability for timely and effective English language acquisition. A core academic teacher assigned to provide instruction in a language other than English to an English learner in a bilingual setting, must be properly qualified in the field and grade level of the assignment, and hold the Bilingual Education Endorsement.
