Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS)

Preliminary EWIS Information for 2025-2026 School Year is in Edwin!

EWIS data for the 2025-2026 School year is available for districts who certified SSDR and/or SCS on-time. Students who have data available from the previous school year will be assigned a risk level of High, Moderate or Low on specific academic milestones.

If you are seeing no or limited data, please check your claiming status for your school and district. Districts must claim students to see them in EWIS reports.

EWIS reports are at the aggregate and student level. Student level reports require an "Administrator" security role to be designated by your local Edwin Analytics contact. It is highly suggested that school counselors, and school and district administrators be designated with this role to fully engage with the information available.

Please refer to Understanding the 2026 EWIS Files for more information about what 2026 files look like.

Massachusetts educators do not have to wait for students to fail to know they are at risk. They can step in sooner with EWIS.

With the Early Warning Indicator System (EWIS), the state provides tools for districts to identify students who are at risk of not meeting important academic goals to help students get back on track. This comprehensive system spans first grade through high school graduation and beyond.

EWIS virtual trainings occurring in late August.

Three different sessions over three mornings. Feel free to attend all three sessions, two of the sessions or one of the sessions. It is only necessary to register once; we will send reminders. Also please register if you can't attend and would like to get recordings of these sessions.

Tues August 26th EWIS 101

This session is the very basics of the Early Warning Indicator System. If you are an experienced user, and don't want a refresher, this session is not for you. If you are a newer user, or want a refresher, feel free to jump aboard!

Wed August 27th Using EWIS with Social Emotional Learning SEL in mind

A favorite of many of our EWIS fans with John Crocker from Methuen Public Schools and the Massachusetts School Mental Health Consortium considers using EWIS with mental health and other student data to move students towards academic and social success!

Thurs August 28th Using VOCAL Data

This session will focus on the use of VOCAL data with other data that you may have in district and their potential use in data meetings.

Academic Milestones

Grades 1–3: Reading by the end of third grade (3rd grade ELA MCAS)

Grades 4–6 Middle school ready (Meeting and Exceeding 6th grade Mathematics and ELA MCAS)

Grades 7–9 High school ready (Passing all ninth grade courses)

Grades 10–12 High school graduation, College Enrollment and College Persistence (4 year high school graduation, immediate college enrollment and persisting in college from first year to second year)

Using the EWIS tools alongside local context, educators can explore underlying causes leading to academic risk and develop additional supports to meet the unique strengths and needs of their students.

Early Warning Starter Kit

Several years ago, ten districts were awarded grants to enhance EWIS and data use for one year. See highlights and examples of their work.
